2 Options For Cooling A Room Without Central AC, A Ceiling Fan, Or A Window

Cooling a home that doesn't have central air conditioning can involve a combination of ceiling fans and window air conditioning. But what if you have a room or rooms in the house that don't have a window and lack the space or bracing for a ceiling fan? Closing off the room for the summer isn't always an option so there are a couple of cooling systems that could still make those tricky living airs more comfortable.

Ventless Portable AC

Portable air conditioners come in a variety of styles including a handy model that you can pick up and carry around by its handle. But many portable air conditioners require the presence of at least a small window so that you can vent the unit by sticking a hose outside. An exception is the ventless portable air conditioner, which is also called a swamp cooler or evaporative cooler.

An evaporative cooler works by taking moisture out of the air and relies on the chemical change that happens during evaporation. The chemical change causes the air to become cooler as evaporation commences. This system doesn't require the use of refrigerant, which fuels a traditional air conditioner, and also doesn't require the presence of a window for ventilation.

The evaporative cooler can't lower the air temperature as much as a traditional ac system and doesn't help against high humidity. If your area has sweltering humid summers, this might not be the best cooling choice for your situation.

Through-the-Wall AC

Do you require lower temperatures than evaporation provides and are willing to install a more permanent option to the tricky room? Consider asking an air conditioning repair and installation company to put in a through-the-wall air conditioner.

Through-the-wall units should look familiar to anyone who has ever stayed in a hotel. The large wall units have an interior portion that sticks out into your room, a main body that sits inside the wall, and a rear side that sits outside your home for venting. The unit works in a similar way to a window air conditioner unit, which means you can achieve a higher level of cooling despite not having a window.

Note that a through-the-wall unit might require higher initial costs than a portable unit due to the difficult installation process. Maintenance will also prove a bit more tricky and expensive but you might consider these cons worth having a cooler room during the summer.
